I know this has already existed on Skype, Macbooks, etc etc. But somehow when Google incorporates video chat inside their general email interface- I dunno. It just seems like a perfect storm of technology has arrived.
It feels almost like this- almost.
It also probably helps that my laptop has a webcam and microphone incorporated into it already. Zero effort to get things working is always very nice.

Also anyone with kids that leave stuff turned on or friends that play jokes, is your private world being broadcast for all to see? Mark my word, there will be many hard to explain things that will be available for too many eyes to watch.

No but Dad, see, it’s like a phone- you have to answer it before the video engages. Both parties have to agree on the connection.
This is no different than the telephone. The camera only on when you want.
