1-2-3-4, I-love-Marine-Corps!

November 11, 2008

Yesterday was the birthday of the USMC, and there is a great piece up at culture11 by Joe Carter in honor of that day. I recommend reading it.

Not only that, but today is also Veterans’ Day (not sure if it’s supposed to get the ‘ or not, but I’m too lazy to look it up). My grandfather served in the Army in WWII. He wrote his memoirs and several years ago, and presented bound copies of them to the entire family at Christmas. It is an inspiring book of memories to be sure. I wish I could see my grandaddy today, but I’ll have to settle for giving him a call.

Hug, call, or thank a veteran today. They are treasures to be acknowledged.

Unintentional blogging hiatus

June 23, 2008

The way I decide whether or not to write a blog post about something is an enigma.  I really have no idea what the impetus is exactly, but it is primarily based on an impulse that I can describe most accurately as an itch.  There is a blogging itch that just hits me now and then.  And so I scratch.

However, I haven’t had that itch for a good 2 or 3 weeks.  This is odd.  Now I will do what I usually do and commence introspection and self over-analyzation.

Out you go, little buckaroo.

Today my land lord calls and informs me that I have 2 weeks to find a new place to live.

Soooo…. if anybody has something available, please give me a call or drop me an email. Thanks.

You believe what you sing

April 13, 2008

After returning home victoriously from a rather diverting game of Puerto Rico followed by an unsuccessful go at Settlers of Catan this evening, I found myself pondering (completely randomly) how much (little?) thought seems to go into the lyrics of modern worship songs sung in churches. I discovered a rather entertaining (to me) blog with lots of good links critiquing such things:

http://badlyricsmakebadtheology.blogspot.com/

I just did a cursory perusal of this one and it doesn’t seem to be done out of a self-important attitude, just a simple desire for music to be grounded in solid theology. However, I will say a couple of the posts seem a little nit-picky even for me:

Why do we “need” Jesus?

We believe in God / and we all need Jesus
‘Cause life is hard / and it might not get easier

I guess I might have trouble meriting heaven by myself, so I need help of some sort from Jesus. In this song, is he my savior, or my example or friend or therapist or life coach or what??

Overly obsessive attention to nuance notwithstanding, I do agree with the author’s general sentiment: that bad lyrics make for bad theology. Another way of putting it might be, similar to “you are what you eat”, you believe what you sing.

Rabbit Trail: Peruse is one of a small list of words in English which has two definitions, one being the opposite of the other. Peruse may mean a detailed investigation, or it can also mean a quick overview. Another word which has two opposite meanings is cleave; two things may cleave together, e.g. a man will cleave to his wife, or you can cleave a melon in half; interestingly enough, one cannot “uncleave” or “decleave” a melon. I’m sure there are other ones but I can’t think of any right now. Anyway.

Regarding bad theology of worship music, one song that has always bugged me to death is this one by Shane Barnard:

You said “Ask and you will receive”
Whatever you need
You Said “Pray and I’ll hear from heaven and I’ll heal your land”

You said, Your glory will fill the earth like water to seas
You said “Lift up your eyes the harvest is here the kingdom is near”

You said ask and I’ll give the nations to you
Oh Lord, thats the cry of my heart
Distant shores and the islands will see your light
as it rises on us

You said “Ask and you will receive”
Whatever you need
You Said “Pray and I’ll hear from heaven and I’ll heal your land”

You said, Your glory will fill the earth
like water to seas
You said “Lift up your eyes the harvest is here the kingdom is near”

You said ask and I’ll give the nations to you
Oh Lord, thats the cry of my heart
Distant shores and the islands will see your light
as it rises on us

Ask and I’ll give the nations to you
Oh Lord, thats the cry of my heart
Distant shores and the islands will see your light
as it rises on earth

This song is a smattering of different scriptures from all over the Bible- some of which aren’t even translated right, being paraphrases- which when put together paint a really distorted picture of God’s work on Earth through the Church, the prospects of success and failure of that work, topped off by a rosy, puppy dogs and ice cream view of the end result of it all. And to make things worse, it completely disregards the intended meaning behind the scriptures it seemingly elucidates.. it is riddle with exegetical error.

For one thing, Habbakuk 2:14 (a notoriously misconstrued verse which in my experience has been purported to mean anything from universalism to predestination to premillenial-dispensationalism) does not have anything to do with the gospel of Jesus Christ going out to all the nations. It’s about a specific incident of God’s wrath poured out on idol worshipers causing the nations around them to repent. Read the context, people:

Hab 2:12 “Woe to him who builds a city with bloodshed And founds a town with violence!
Hab 2:13 “Is it not indeed from the LORD of hosts That peoples toil for fire, And nations grow weary for nothing?
Hab 2:14 “For the earth will be filled With the knowledge of the glory of the LORD, As the waters cover the sea.
Hab 2:15 “Woe to you who make your neighbors drink, Who mix in your venom even to make {them} drunk So as to look on their nakedness!
Hab 2:16 “You will be filled with disgrace rather than honor. Now you yourself drink and expose your {own} nakedness. The cup in the LORD’S right hand will come around to you, And utter disgrace {will come} upon your glory.
Hab 2:17 “For the violence done to Lebanon will overwhelm you, And the devastation of {its} beasts by which you terrified them, Because of human bloodshed and violence done to the land, To the town and all its inhabitants.
Hab 2:18 “What profit is the idol when its maker has carved it, {Or} an image, a teacher of falsehood? For {its} maker trusts in his {own} handiwork When he fashions speechless idols.
Hab 2:19 “Woe to him who says to a {piece of} wood, ‘Awake!’ To a mute stone, ‘Arise!’ {And} that is {your} teacher? Behold, it is overlaid with gold and silver, And there is no breath at all inside it.
Hab 2:20 “But the LORD is in His holy temple. Let all the earth be silent before Him.”

People might argue that this incident did not cause the knowledge of God’s glory to fill the Earth, but this is obviously prophetic/ apocalyptic language, examples of which are used throughout the Bible all the time. This is just one example the ridiculousness of this song. I could go on and on about it. And the sad thing is, I like the song- it’s really not bad as worship music goes- it’s just too bad the lyrics are so odiously distracting.

Is it too much to ask for theologically-sound Christian music to be sung in churches and para-church organizations? Am I being too demanding of our creative sisters and brothers? I don’t want to be a jerk or a party pooper.. really I don’t. I just think that putting what seems like zero effort into the meaning behind music lyrics ought to left to people who have nothing important to sing about.

What really worries me is that this casual attitude seems indicative of the general mode in much of the church toward theology and the study of scripture today- and it doesn’t seem isolated to one generation either. Maybe this has been the case for most of the last 2000 years and I shouldn’t get too hung up on it. But then again a relaxed adherence toward scriptural truth by even small groups of people contributed to the existence of such things as slavery, Nazism, the beginnings of Islam and Mormonism, and gnosticism.

I wouldn’t lay the responsibility of these unfortunate occurrences at the feet of Shane Barnard, Chris Tomlin or Amy Grant though. That’s just over the top. But it’s worth paying attention to such things.

$900

February 28, 2008

-Random personal update since this is, you know, my blog. -

Just thought I would inform the world: I spent $900 to fix my car’s power steering today. And it snowed. And WFB died. And I have an impossibly difficult geography exam tomorrow.

Life is.. mediocre. And yet I dare to be happy. Being mopey is too easy.

Need a roommate

February 16, 2008

My roommate is moving out, and in the interest of living with someone I at least sort of know rather than a total stranger selected by my landlord, I am seeking out a replacement. It’s a nice place over off Tates Creek Rd in Lexington with your own bathroom, large bedroom, dishwasher, etc etc. $350/month all utilities included, just $20 extra for cable internet.

So, if you or someone you know are not, say, a Branch Davidian or addicted to meth, and need a place to live, send me an email. I’m not too picky.

MLK- why can’t that guy mind his own business?

January 21, 2008

Funny Martin Luther King- related story.

My dad owns a couple properties around town- not anything overly large, about 30 units total. This past Friday, as is his wont, he is out collecting rent. He attempts to do so from one of his residents who does not have all of it, and the resident tries to explain why. It is pertinent to the humor of the exchange to inform you that the gentleman in question is a black guy. The explanation went something like this (not a direct quote):

I’m sorry I’m short again this week on the rent- they just won’t let me work! First there was Christmas, then New Year’s Day… how am I supposed to get money if they won’t let me go to work? And now this darn Martin Luther King Day on Monday… I swear, why couldn’t he just mind his own business??!

Happy MLK Day, everyone!

Moved, a new semester, and some sarcasm

January 15, 2008

Thought I’d post something about myself for a change. I know there are just so many people out there in the world dying to know what I’m up to.

Incidentally, is ending a sentence with “what I’m up to” a grammatical error? I’m not really big on grammar, but I do care about it. From what I understand, ending a sentence with a preposition is a no-no. But how would one express the idea otherwise? “..so many people… dying to know to what I am up.”?? I mean, that just sounds lame.

I moved. My new apartment is about the same as the previous one, but my roommate is definitely not. Let’s compare and contrast my former and current roommates:

Former roommate: Derek
1. Has more clothes than closet space to contain them
2. Dines almost exclusively on wheat thins, spaghetti, lactaid, and various and sundry cold medicines.
3. Watches Friends, Big Brother, and Will & Grace.
4. Owns leather furniture, shag carpet, a dining room set, king-size bed, and had his place professionally decorated.
5. Goes to the gym.

Current roommate: Byron
1. As near as I can tell, only owns t shirts.
2. Dines almost exclusively on bacon, fish sticks, budweiser, mt dew, and I think I saw some cornbread on the counter the other day.
3. Plays Xbox and watches movies with Milla Jovovich over and over again.
4. Has a card table. Doesn’t own a microwave.
5. Has 2 bikes, and ‘cycles’; quotation marks because, let’s be honest, ‘cycling’ is simply a transparent attempt at making ‘riding a bike’ sound more interesting than it is.

Wait, this was supposed to be about me.

So I moved, and I like my new place just fine.

In other news, the semester has begun, and I am officially insane. Now we will explore why.

My classes:
Structural Analysis (3 hours)
Civil Engineering Materials (4 hours)
Soil Mechanics (3 hours)
Construction Methodology (3 hours)
Water and Wastewater Treatment (3 hours)
Intro to Film (3 hours)
Geography: Lands and People of the 3rd World (3 hours)

For a grand total of 22 hours- 16 of which are engineering classes. The other 2 classes, Intro to Film and Geography, occasion some comment.

The film class is intended to fulfill my graduation writing requirement- so that explains why I’m taking it in the first place. I’ll be writing several papers, watching about a dozen films in languages other than English, and doing a in class presentation. Should be just the giggles.

Lands and People of the Non-Western World? Based on the first day of class, I’m thinking it ought to be called: “Let’s talk about why the west sucks and how all other cultures are superior to ours.” I’m taking this one to fulfill the University of Kentucky’s liberal indoctrination (AKA cross cultural) requirement.

Should be just the giggles.

Help.

November 2, 2007

So my roommate comes home tonight and, pretty much out of the blue, let’s me know he’s decided he doesn’t want to have a roommate anymore. Which is fine- It’s his place and he can do what he wants.  But it does kind of throw a wrench in the plans I had for the rest of the next 2 semesters.

Anyway. I’m in the market for a new place to stay. If anyone has (at minimum) a 10×10′ hole with running water and heat, give me a jing a ring. 967-9144. I’m easy to live with a smell ok at least 50% of the time.

Soporific paraphernalia

September 14, 2007

Insomnia.

I don’t get it much, but I’ve been dealing with a lot of it lately.  Probably related to certain things going on in my life right now.

So I get up, and poke around the internet for something to make me tired.. something to bore me to tears.  Can’t find anything.  So I post a blog. Except I have nothing to say.

And so it goes.

I often wonder if I’m missing out on some great purpose in life; it’s like I have a bus ticket but can’t find the depot.  I don’t mind the mystery of  it to be honest, and can deal just fine with the frustration.  Only sometimes I think, especially at 3 in the morning,  boy it’d be nice to have someone to look for the station with.
